The Most Vulnerable: Protecting Children and the Elderly from Fire
In a fire, seconds decide who survives — and the very young and the very old have the fewest seconds of all. Children may hide or freeze; the elderly may not wake, hear, or move in time. Protecting them takes a little planning, and it saves lives.
What Georgia's cases show
These are real, painful reminders:
- In Tbilisi's Gldani district, a three-year-old child died in a house fire; rescuers could not reach the child in time. (Pravda Georgia)
- In the Gali district, five children — from eight months to eight years old — died in a house fire while with their grandmother, who survived; a stove had been lit with the wrong fuel. (Ambebi, Rustavi2)
- In Chiatura, an elderly couple, alone at home, died together when fire broke out. (Georgian media)
The very young and the very old, often at home with limited ability to escape — that is who fire takes most.
Protecting children
- Teach the rules early: in a fire, don't hide — get low, get out, and go to a meeting point. Never go back inside.
- Never leave young children alone near a stove, heater, candle, or open flame.
- Lock away matches and lighters — they cause many child-started fires.
- Fit smoke detectors; practise a simple escape drill so it feels familiar, not frightening.
Protecting the elderly
- Detectors they can actually hear — loud, with a flashing light for poor hearing.
- Clear escape routes and a charged phone within reach of the bed.
- Safe heating — serviced, well away from bedding and curtains.
- Regular check-ins, and an agreed plan for what to do if a fire starts.
For everyone
