Alone When It Mattered Most: An Elderly Couple, a Fire, and a Lesson for Every Family
In the village of Mandaeti, in Chiatura, an elderly couple died together when fire broke out in their home. They were alone. It is, in part, a story of a long life shared to the very end — and also a quiet warning about the people fire endangers most: older people, living on their own.
What happened
Fire broke out in the couple's home, and the two of them, alone in the house, did not survive. (Reported by Georgian media.) It is a scene that repeats across the country: an older person or couple, often heating with wood or gas, with no one nearby in the seconds that decide everything.
Why the elderly are so vulnerable
Fire moves faster than most people expect. For an older person, the disadvantages stack up: reduced mobility makes escape slower; deeper sleep or poor hearing can mean an alarm goes unheard; reflexes and eyesight are not what they were; and living alone means there is no one to wake them, guide them, or carry them out. Add older homes and wood or gas heating, and the risk rises further.
How to protect an elderly relative
- 1.Fit smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors — and test them yourself. For poor hearing, choose alarms that are loud and have a flashing light.
- 2.Keep a clear, unobstructed escape route, and a charged phone within reach of the bed.
- 3.Make their heating safe — service it, keep space heaters well away from bedding and curtains, and consider safer heating options.
- 4.Keep an extinguisher or fire-extinguisher ball where fires start — the kitchen, near the heater — somewhere easy to reach without bending or searching.
- 5.Check in regularly, and agree a simple plan together for what to do if a fire starts.
