A Smell of Gas, Ignored: The Tbilisi Explosion That Should Never Have Happened
In Tbilisi's Didi Dighomi district, residents of a residential building smelled gas. They alerted the gas company. Before the leak was made safe, the building exploded. Four people were killed — including a small child — and eight were injured.
What happened
According to reporting by OC Media and RFE/RL, the blast tore through the building after natural gas accumulated inside. Neighbours had noticed the smell beforehand and warned the supplier. Afterwards, Georgia's Energy Ombudsman pointed to "systemic problems" in how the gas network is managed — and to a hard fact: many of the pipelines carrying gas into Georgian homes are old and prone to leaks.

- 3.Shut the gas at the main tap, if it is safe to reach.
- 4.Get everyone out of the building.
- 5.From outside, call 112 and your gas supplier.
