• Never leave hot cooking oil unattended on the stove.
• Check the electrical wiring regularly — older buildings often have outdated wiring.

• Keep flammable materials away from heaters and stoves.
• Have your gas appliances checked by a professional once a year.
• Agree on an escape plan and a meeting point, and practise it with your family.
• Store chemicals in a cool, ventilated place.
